MEET THE RESIDENTS
Our gentle giant, Joseph, is the largest sheep at our sanctuary.  Weighing in at over 350 Lbs, he is as docile and kind as they come!  Rescued at just 2 days old from a commercial farm, Joseph was a fragile bottle baby who needed around the clock care to survive.  With love, patience and the veterinary care he needed, he pulled through and grew into the gentle soul we adore today!  Joseph is a beautiful reminder of the resilience these animals carry within them when given a chance to feel safe and loved.  Please consider becoming Joseph's sponsor and help us continue giving him and other like him, the life they deserve.
Nora was rescued in 2020 following a cruelty case where all of the animals on the farm were living in heartbreaking conditions. But Nora never let her past define her.  She absolutely loves people, especially children and shares a special bond with her friend Joseph.  Known as the sanctuary's "social butterfly," Nora is always one of the first to greet new visitors with her warm and gentle energy.  Please consider becoming Nora's sponsor and help us continue giving her and other like her, the life they deserve.
Jimmy's rescue, at 4 days old, saw him weak and needed constant care after his mother couldn't nurse him on a commercial sheep farm.  We poured our hearts into helping him survive and now he's grown into the friendliest, happiest boy at the sanctuary.  You can make a huge difference in Jimmy's life by becoming his sponsor!  Your support helps cover his routine care and makes it possible for us to open our doors to more animals who are in desperate need of rescue!

"Run to the rescue with love...
and peace will follow"

We rescued Reggie's mother, Rachel, May 2025 just a couple of months after rescuing Reggie.  She had been listed as "slaughter only" due to developing Mastitis. Rachel was immediately given the vet care she needed and although she has healed, this will likely be a chronic issue and her vet has warned us that she may need a partial mastectomy if the infections continue to recur.  Rachel is the absolute sweetest soul and the most devoted mother to Reggie.  Being able to reunite her with her son after she healed will forever remain one of the greatest joys of our lives.  Please help us continue to give this little family the safe, happy life they deserve and allow us to keep rescuing more in desperate need.
We rescued river Easter 2025 and was nothing short of extraordinary(See the video on Instagram or Facebook). He was a stray who was first spotted wandering through a residential neighborhood in the city.  We suspect he may have been intended as a Ramadan sacrifice and somehow managed to escape.  His rescue took over two weeks, countless hours monitoring neighborhood and 911 apps, the use of a drone, a tranquilizer and the help of more than a dozen incredible people!  We later learned that River had been chased into the Hoover Reservoir by a dog and nearly drowned.  Dr. Corsmeier with Lost Pet Recovery was able to safely dart him with a tranquilizer after getting approval from park rangers.  Even after administering the reversals, River wasn't waking up.  We rushed him to OSU and did everything we could to revive him on the way.  His body temperature was critically low at 93 F (normal is 101.5-103.5), likely from being in the cold water for so long.  River pulled through and spent 4 days at OSU before making his way to CAFS.  The staff had been calling him "River" and the name couldn't have suited him more perfectly.  While he was still lost in the woods, he only responded to the sound of other sheep we played on our phones so it was no surprise that he quickly bonded with the flock once he arrived. River has overcome unimaginable trauma and continues to heal every day.  Please consider becoming River's hero and sponsor him to give him the beautiful life that he so deeply deserves!
Reggie is an incredibly sweet Katahdin sheep who was born with severe deformities to his urinary system. Reggie's urethra is located near his rectum, so when he urinates, the urine drips down his scrotum and  legs irritating his skin.  Unfortunately, there isn't a corrective surgery and vets aren't sure what his long term future holds or if he will have a normal lifespan.  For now, he's doing wonderfully and we remain hopeful he will continue to thrive under our care.  Reggie requires a lot of TLC to keep his backside clean to prevent skin infection.  While his deformity is very unfortunate, it is also what ultimately saved this soul.  Because of a deformity, he was deemed "useless" by the farmer who had advertised him as "very tender meat." We were also able to rescue Reggie's mom, Rachel, after she fell ill and was listed "for slaughter only." She, too, is thriving and Reggie is never far from her side.  Please help us continue to give this little family the safe, happy life they deserve and allow us to keep rescuing more in desperate need.
Betty arrived at CAFS last year with three holes in her ears from tags.  It was evident that we were at least her fourth home.  Somewhere along the way, her jaw was broken and never treated.  It healed on its own, painfully and irreparably. When she came to us, she was emaciated and terrified.  Today, Betty eats well but still needs supplemental feeding to maintain her weight since surgery isn't recommended.  It is heartbreaking that the very injury that caused her so much suffering may have been what spared her life.  She likely wasn't seen as worth the effort to butcher because of how thin she was beneath all of her wool.  That is the grim truth for so many animals like Betty; discarded when they're no longer profitable.  Here at CAFS, however, Betty is not only surviving, she's thriving!  Betty has made friends(especially her bestie-Reggie), found peace and is finally safe.  Please help us continue to give more animals like Betty the safe and happy life they deserve.
Hanna is a beautiful and playful 2 year old Shetland who was rescued May 2023 when she was just 15 days old.  Her mother was unable to nurse her after developing mastitis.  Sadly, the farm refused to relinquish her mother as well, preventing them from staying together and from her mom receiving the vet care she desperately needed.  When we got to Cafe with hanna, she was emaciated, covered in mites and heartbreakingly sad after being taken from the only comfort she had ever known;  her mother.  We provided her with around the clock bottles and endless love every single day.   Those sad days are far behind and today, Hanna is one of the happiest souls at the sanctuary.  She has a playful and fun personality. Hanna loves her friends here and her giant blue horse ball!  Please consider helping us continue to give Hanna the care she deserves and allow us to keep rescuing more in need.
This sweet girl lived near the airport on I-670 for quite some time.  Her rescue, by Lost Pet Recovery, took over a month and we are grateful for their tireless effort.  She came to us with broken teeth clueing us into how long she had actually been living in fear of predators and speeding cars.  When she arrived, she was very fearful but has grown very fond of her new family and will actually take treats out of our hands now!  This girl needs lots of treats to show her how much she can finally trust someone.  Will you get her some treats?
We rescued Benji in January 2020.  When we went to meet him, he was on his best behavior!  This lasted about two weeks after we brought him home.  Then his true colors came out, a little ornery, a lot sassy, and 100% himself. 😂

At Compassionate Acres, we believe every animal should get to be exactly who they are; quirks and all. We adore Benji just the way he is. He's a total character and has one of the funniest routines: every night around 7–8 pm, he puts himself to bed, closing (and locking!) his stall door and locking everyone out🤣

Please be Benji's hero and become his monthly sponsor. 💛
Your support helps provide his hay, bedding (sawdust and straw), and veterinary care and ensures that animals like Benji continue to live their best, happiest, quirkiest lives.
"From Lonely to Loved"- A Harlow story

When we rescued Harlow in 2022, she was heartbreakingly thin and didn't even recognize has a food.  For years, she lived alone in a barn after her only companion was sold.  Her coat was in such poor condition, we nearly had to shave her completely.  Today, Harlow has one of the most beautiful coats in the barn and a whole family who adore her (to be honest, maybe a little jealous due to how luxurious her hair is). Her best friend Sadie is never far from her side and her lonely days are, thankfully, long behind her.  By becoming Harlow's sponsor, you're actually helping the next Harlow.  She is out there right now; hungry and alone.  When we learn about her, we want to be able to say "YES!" Please consider sponsoring Harlow today!
💛 Sadie's story is one of quiet heartbreak and beautiful new beginnings.

We rescued senior goat Sadie in 2024. She had lived in seclusion for years after her two babies were sold off. Goats are herd animals, and being alone leaves them feeling scared, vulnerable and incredibly lonely. It's not how they're meant to live.

Watching animals who once knew only loneliness find friendship and acceptance here is one of the greatest joys of running a sanctuary. Sweet Sadie is no exception. She formed an instant bond with Harlow, who also once lived alone and now, the two are inseparable. 🐐💕

By sponsoring Sadie, you're helping provide her hay, bedding (sawdust and straw), and veterinary care but even more importantly, you're helping the next Sadie. She's out there right now alone and afraid. When we learn about her, we want to be able to say yes.

Please help us do that. Please 🙏
💔"Uthinkable Pain and Loss Told through Incredible Resilience" - A Dupree Story

When we rescued Dupree in 2023, he had survived what no animal should ever have to endure. Two weeks earlier, he had been attacked by dogs. He was the sole survivor, forced to witness the loss of his entire family of five goats.

For two long weeks, Dupree received no medical care or pain relief. His leg bone was exposed, and his body was septic. By the time he reached us, the damage was too severe and his leg had to be amputated.

Despite everything, Dupree's gentle spirit shines bright. He's sensitive, sweet, and thriving at the sanctuary. He gets around wonderfully on three legs and is rarely far from his best friend, Betsy. 🐐💛

Every single resident at CAFS shares one thing in common: They've all endured incredibly hard lives before finding sanctuary here.  13+ year old Betsy is no exception.  She was rescued 3 years ago after spending an unimaginable ten years chained to a dog house.  ONE. WHOLE. DECADE!  Betsy had no companionship which is heartbreaking.  Especially for her because goats are deeply social, herd animals.  We can only imagine the loneliness she felt every single day.  When we brought her home, we couldn't wait to give her everything she never had...
-A spacious barn filled with soft straw to rest upon.
-11 acres of lush, green pasture to roam and graze freely.
-The freedom to come and go as she pleases.
However, what excited us most was that she now had a family!  After her quarantine, Betsy was overjoyed to meet the her and they welcomed her with open hearts and she quickly blossomed.  Kind, gentle and always close by our side, Betsy finally found the life she deserves.  Betsy has formed a special bond with Dupree. One of the greatest joys of sanctuary life is witnessing these powerful bonds.  Betsy not only has a family now, she has a best friend.  She will never be lonely again! Please allow us to rescue more underdogs like Betsy by becoming a monthly sponsor.
🧡 From slaughterhouse to sanctuary, meet Nelson. 🧡

Nelson's story could have ended in tragedy... but fate had other plans.

He escaped while being unloaded at a slaughterhouse and spent over a month on the run. The farmer no longer wanted him, and people from the slaughterhouse were trying to capture him to butcher.

When we heard his story, we drove to the area where he was last seen and miraculously, we found him right away. We were able to safely corral him and bring him to the sanctuary, where his healing began.

After quarantine, disease testing, CD&T, and parasite treatment, Nelson finally got to meet the herd and they bonded instantly. Watching him find safety, friendship, and peace after all he's been through is something we'll never forget.

It's hard to imagine what this gentle soul almost had to endure that day. Instead, he will live free and loved for the rest of his life. 💛

💚 Donnie's story is nothing short of a miracle.

We rescued Donnie in June 2025 after he was attacked by a dog and sustained a fractured femur. We knew things were serious when the doctor at OSU said, "Unfortunately, his femur fracture isn't even his biggest problem."

After seeing cardiology, we learned Donnie had two severe congenital heart defects — an atrioventricular septal defect and pulmonary valve stenosis. His doctors couldn't say whether he had weeks, months, or years ahead... or if he could even survive the surgery to repair his broken leg. Euthanasia was strongly recommended.

But we saw a fighter in Donnie and we decided to give him a chance. 💪💚

Miraculously, his secondary heart condition actually helps balance his blood flow, and he made it through surgery beautifully. Today, you'd never know he once faced such impossible odds. Donnie is thriving, full of personality, energy, and love. He keeps up with all his goat and sheep friends who adore him just as much as we do. 🐐✨

Elsie was born at the sanctuary, just a week after her mother arrived. Her mom had spent her entire life being used as a breeder, forced to have litter after litter.

Meet Andrew, one of the most precious souls at Compassionate Acres Farm Sanctuary. We rescued Andrew back in October 2020 from Elkview WV.

Andrew is what's called a Crosbeak. This is when the beak grows crooked and eating becomes difficult for them. Andrew was on the brink of death when we got him and his road to recovery was a long one.

Andrew's living the good life now and even has a girlfriend (Abigail who is also a bourbon red) Andrew's beak is crooked and he has very little vision in the right eye but contrary to how he looks he's very happy and not in any pain.

Andrew requires frequent meals of a watered down food (a mash consistency) and is messy when he eats so he does require baths every few months and an extra warm space in the winter. He also requires frequent beak trims. Luckily Andrew loves being pampered and will rest his head on our shoulder while we groom him.

Special needs animals can do well with a little extra TLC.

Andrew is evidence of that and we are so happy he's with us and thriving.

By becoming Andrew’s monthly sponsor, you help provide everything this sweet boy needs to thrive: food, bedding, safe housing and all necessary veterinary care.

Your gift not only supports Andrew it also allows us to continue giving more deserving souls the safe, loving life they should have always known. 🤍
